Commemorating the Arrival of the Apollo 11 Crew at
Tempelhof Central Airport, West Berlin, Germany
The Crew of the Apollo 11 spacecraft, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, touched down at the United States Air Force base located at Tempelhof Central Airport, West Berlin, Germany at 10:30 AM on Monday, October 13, 1969. They were on a world tour only three months after making their historic landing on the moon on July 20, 1969
On the tarmac to greet the three astronauts (left to right) were their three wives, U.S. Ambassador Kenneth Rush, Mayor of West Berlin, Klaus Schuetz, and the U.S. Army Commander Major General R.G. Fergusson.
I happened to be stationed with the USAF at the time and was lucky enough to be off duty the day they flew in. I took this photo as I stood on the tarmac watching their aircraft taxi in. In later years, I decided to paint the scene in watercolor.
